Alibaba Cloud is still number three in the global Infrastructure as a Service and Infrastructure Utility Services market, retaining its ranking for the second year in the row while growing its overall market share, according to global research and advisory firm Gartner.* Alibaba Cloud also held onto its leadership position in the Asia Pacific market for a second year.

In 2018, the cloud-computing and data-intelligence arm of Alibaba Group saw its global market share climb to 4.9% from 3.4% the year prior. In APAC, Alibaba Cloud stayed at number one by growing its market share to 19.6% last year from 14.9% in 2017.

“It is very encouraging that our continued dedication in enabling cloud development across industries in both Asia Pacific and globally has been recognized by world’s leading research and advisory company,” said Lancelot Guo, vice president of Alibaba Group and head of strategy and marketing at Alibaba Cloud.

“As the only global cloud provider originated from Asia, we will continue to champion millions of businesses through our world-class infrastructure, advanced analytics tools and thriving ecosystem,” he said.

The annual Gartner Market Share report measures company footprints in terms of revenue in the IT services, software and security industries. The report, available to Gartner clients, helps those clients understand how market share is allocated among 900 technology providers in over 30 key markets, according to Gartner’s website.

Alibaba Cloud has also ranked in two other recent Gartner reports. In the firm’s “The Future of the DBMS Market Is Cloud” report released in June, Alibaba Cloud ranked third in cloud database management system revenues among global players in 2018, ranking behind top-ranked Amazon and then Microsoft. According to Gartner, Alibaba Cloud’s DBMS revenue increased 116% year-on-year in 2018 versus 75% and 134% for Amazon and Microsoft, respectively. In Gartner’s “Market Share: Enterprise Network Equipment by Market Segment, Worldwide, 1Q19” report, also released in June, Alibaba Cloud is the only company from Asia on the global top Server Load Balancer list, ranking fifth globally.

In a release, Alibaba Cloud said that its technology and public cloud platform underpin the entire Alibaba economy from e-commerce and payments to logistics and supply-chain management. Last year, Alibaba Cloud supported $30.8 billion in transactions during the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival.

After being tested within the Alibaba Group ecosystem, the technology is made available to customers. “Businesses of all sizes have leveraged these proven technologies to grow and innovate around the globe,” Alibaba Cloud said in its release.

Alibaba Cloud breaks its global network coverage into regions, with availability zones spread out within them. Each availability zone has one or more data centers. Currently, Alibaba Cloud has 58 availability zones across 20 regions worldwide, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, Singapore, Malaysia,Japan, Indonesiaand India.
