Alibaba’s intellectual property protection team recently helped dismantle two large-scale counterfeit manufacturing operations targeting premium American bicycle brand Specialized, marking one of the most significant anti-counterfeiting actions in the cycling industry to date.
Working alongside Specialized and Chinese law enforcement, the coordinated enforcement action led to multiple arrests and the seizure of large quantities of counterfeit bicycle components.
The operation represents the largest anti-counterfeiting case in Specialized’s history and underscores Alibaba’s long-standing commitment to protecting intellectual property, safeguarding consumers, and supporting brands in tackling illicit manufacturing operations beyond online marketplaces.
Counterfeit bicycle components pose serious safety risks, particularly when they imitate high-performance carbon fiber products designed to meet strict engineering and safety standards. Products uncovered in previous investigations were found to have failed safety requirements, sometimes catastrophically, putting riders at significant risk.

While AliExpress deploys AI-driven tools and rapid takedown mechanisms to detect and remove infringing listings online, the case illustrates why lasting impact requires going beyond the digital realm and targeting the physical operations that manufacture and distribute counterfeit goods.
In this investigation, AliExpress’ IP enforcement team provided law enforcement authorities with key digital evidence, helping trace the supply chain from online storefronts back to physical manufacturing facilities. This intelligence played a critical role in enabling authorities to carry out coordinated raids that dismantled the production networks.
Alibaba has worked closely with Specialized on intellectual property protection for years, supporting more than a dozen successful offline enforcement actions. These efforts include a major takedown in 2017 following a two-year joint investigation, as well as multiple operations targeting counterfeit helmet sellers abusing online marketplaces.
Andrew Love, Global Brand Protection Manager at Specialized, said the latest operation demonstrates the importance of sustained collaboration between brands, platforms, and law enforcement.
“Specialized is unwavering in its commitment to protecting its riders and upholding a zero-tolerance policy against dangerous counterfeit products,” Love said. “The success of this largest counterfeit bust in the cycling industry highlights the profound impact of collaboration between brands like ours and tech-driven platforms like AliExpress.”

He added that Chinese law enforcement and Alibaba “deserve immense recognition for their integral role in achieving this milestone.”
Matthew Bassiur, Vice President and Head of Alibaba International’s Global IP Enforcement Team, said the case reflects Alibaba’s broader approach to intellectual property protection.
“Safeguarding consumers and upholding brand trust are core to our platform’s integrity,” Bassiur said. “While we swiftly remove infringing listings from our marketplace, lasting impact requires dismantling physical operations through close partnerships with brands and law enforcement. This case is a prime example of that approach.”

Over the past year alone, AliExpress’ collaboration with more than 20 global brands and law enforcement agencies has led to the global seizure of counterfeit goods valued at over US$30 million, reflecting Alibaba’s sustained efforts to pursue counterfeiters both online and offline.
The Specialized case is the latest example of Alibaba’s recognized leadership in intellectual property protection. In 2024, Alibaba’s IPR efforts were acknowledged by the U.S. government for the company’s proactive cooperation with law enforcement and rights holders. Earlier this year, Alibaba also highlighted its continued IPR leadership across East and Southeast Asia, working closely with authorities and brands to combat cross-border counterfeiting networks.
