A delivery rider uniform designed to protect, dignify, and visually unite China’s growing delivery workforce has claimed the top prize at the French Design Award. Taobao Instant Commerce, Alibaba’s quick commerce business, took the 2026 Gold Award for its “City Rider Suits,” the first time in the competition’s 11-year history that a uniform design has earned the honor.
The jury praised the suits for reimagining delivery workwear from the ground up, fusing precision tailoring, advanced materials, AI-enabled smart equipment, and human-centered functional design into a new benchmark for rider safety, comfort, and performance.
“Its racing-inspired design gives it strong recognizability, offering riders a symbol of pride and belonging while building a more positive connection with customers. The design language is clear, confident, and highly aligned with the brand’s dynamic spirit,” said Dave Amantea, Chief Design Officer at Pininfarina, in a written jury citation. “The careful attention to comfort, protection, and usability significantly improves their daily working experience.”
“The strongest aspect of the proposal is its design impact. It humanizes a profession that has become an indispensable part of contemporary urban life, while improving both the wearer’s confidence and public perception,” said jury member Andrea Mocellin, a renowned independent automotive and aviation designer.
Taobao Instant Commerce launched the “City Rider Suits” in August 2025, distributing them free to more than one million delivery riders. The gear features a dedicated compartment for emergency information cards and essential medical supplies, as well as purpose-built smart earbuds for voice navigation, reducing the need for riders to check phone screens while on the road.
Working with Amap, Alibaba’s digital mapping and navigation service, Taobao Instant Commerce also upgraded smart helmets with accident-detection and positioning capabilities to accelerate emergency rescue response.

Extending Care Beyond the Job
The suits were part of a wider welfare push. Taobao Instant Commerce partnered with more than 20 businesses under Alibaba Group and Ant Group to formally designate all its delivery riders as “City Riders,” expanding their protections, benefits, and professional development pathways.
Over the past year, the program delivered assistance more than four million times, helping more than 200 families navigate critical illnesses and facilitating access to tertiary education for nearly 500 riders.
